mending communities, one sewing machine at a time

Xavier Children’s Program Update

Earlier this year, we delivered sewing machines to Xavier University’s Art Department to outfit their summer Mardi Gras Indians Intensive program. This excellent arts program educates children in the historic art forms that adorn the Mardi Gras Indian suits, not only teaching the processes but also the historical significance of the designs and traditions.
Children had learned the beading and hand sewing aspects of these processes but the program did not have sewing machines to enable the kids to sew the suits together. This summer they were able to use machines donated by The Sewing Machine Project. Take a look at what they’ve accomplished!
